I did it. I’m all caught up.
Another fucking time jump. Sigh. I need to come to terms with these books not being meant to focus on what I really wanted them to focus on. It’s fine. I’m fine. Also, I suppose it could be a noticeable issue for me just because I’m binging all of these older books at once.
But still. Quincy is basically in diapers now. And now I’ve read the synopsis for the next book and it seems the character coming from this ‘verse is Kimberly, not Rainie. Heavier sigh. Kimberly is fine. I do like her. But my true love is Rainie.
Can I still hope for a Rainie/Flora team up? Because I’m going to. Even though Rainie will be 74 years old in the next book and lord knows Flora will be 45, twice divorced, with 6 kids and 2 dogs. Whatever. They’d still kick ass like that.
OK back to this book. Oh I see, Rainie is fostering a girl with an abusive past, no social skills, a ton of self-hatred, but who is also smart and can solve crimes? Perfect. Because I guess the next-next book will be led by the girl, who will now be 28 and a brilliant profiler.

Eight years ago, Telly Ray Nash and his little sister Sharlah were placed in foster homes after the night Telly Ray beat their parents to death with a baseball bat to protect his sister from their abusive father. Fast forward and Sharlah is about to be adopted by her newest foster family — two former FBI profilers — and hasn’t spoken to her brother since that fateful night years ago. But things take a turn when profilers Quincy and Rainie are called to consult on a spree killer case in their hometown and all signs point to Telly Ray Nash as the killer.
I absolutely loved the bones of this story. Misunderstood teens in separate foster families, a loyal dog sidekick, FBI profilers, twists, turns, and family secrets — it had all the makings of a thriller I would adore. But [b:Right Behind You|30076608|Right Behind You (Quincy & Rainie, #7)|Lisa Gardner|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1466466331l/30076608._SY75_.jpg|50117316] could have used another pass by a cutthroat editor because this book was bogged down by so much extra that didn’t need to be there. A faster pace would have given the twists more punch, given Telly and Sharlah’s sibling storyline more urgency, and it would have taken this book to a four star read for me. I thought the character of tracker/cheesemaker Cal Noonan could have been cut entirely, but then I read the author’s note at the end of the book and saw that [a:Lisa Gardner|18282|Lisa Gardner|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1395879573p2/18282.jpg]’s main inspiration for this book was her research on fugitive tracking. This made the inclusion of Cal make more sense, but it didn’t make him necessary in the slightest. Overall, this book had so much potential and I enjoyed myself while reading it, but I really just wanted to get out my red pen and slash entire chapters the whole time I was reading.

Started slow, picked up a little bit, but generally felt like this book plodded. And not a very exciting ending. It had potential for exploring relationships, but barely scratched the surface.

**3.5/5**
Solid Lisa Gardner novel. Rainie and Quincy are fostering/adopting Sharlah who has a troubled past and estranged brother that ends up in a killing spree conspiracy with his newly appointed foster family.

Not my absolute favorite book but very much enjoyed the twists throughout the book.
Finally I finished a book! What normally takes me 2-3 days, took me one week. Well for one my mind was still all over the place the past days and second, I noticed too late that I did not like this book, lol! Might be a minority here since there are lots of 5 and 4 stars.
The book is about Sharlah’s older brother, Telly, who beats their drunk and abusive father with a baseball to death to save both their lives. No charges are made and they are separated after the incident. Both siblings jumps from one foster home to another. After eight years, a double murder at a local gas station is reported and killing spree that only points to Telly as the prime suspect. While the police is out to get Telly, Sharlah believes her brother is innocent and she is running out of time to prove his innocence.
While I like that this is a mystery / crime fiction, I was not hooked into the story. I find it too repetitive. More than half way thru the book it keeps on repeating over and over, chapter after chapter certain situations and that bored me. With a little bit of twist, but I find it also predictive.

I thought I had this one figured out from the jump, and I’m happy to say I was wrong. Every time I knew who did it, there was a twist and a turn. My favorite kind of book.
