I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Ikenna Amari endures rigorous and deadly training to join an elite military force in the hopes of uncovering the story behind her grandfather's death. It's quite violent, focused on themes of military service, racism/colonialism, and magic (her "blood gift"). Ikenna can be somewhat single-minded, but it feels understandable due to the trauma she endures. I found the characters compelling and the world fascinating. The story took some excellent turns, and I immediately started the sequel after finishing.

this was fun - and not really what i expected! based on the extremely cheesy cover (someone call her publisher) i thought this would be an easy-to-read YA novel. it ended up being a bit more wordy, very violent, and contained some surprise smut (personally loved that discovery).

the setting was futuristic/sci-fi, but with gods playing a large role, which i thought was a really interesting concept. race was also major theme, which i always love to see in fantasy books.

besides that, this book was pretty much divergent- which im not mad about! it was also pretty much nonstop action which was mostly fun but definitely left me wanting to see some characters/relationships more fleshed out.

overall a fun time and i'll be reading the second one!
