This book took me a while to get through. Despite that fact, I did find it interesting, heartbreaking and endearing. It follows the Oufkir family from Morocco through their 20 year imprisionment at the hands of the king for the father's attempted coup. This is a memoir, it is not a political statement nor really much of a call to action (which I was surprised at). I had expected more of a call to action simply because there are still so many political prisioners left in Morocco - or the disappeared as they are referred to in the book. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the Oufkir affair, if you have very limited knowledge of this much of the book's innuedos will probably not make much sense and may be confusing.

Engaging and terribly sad. My fear is that I'll be jailed without due justice.

Really, I wanted to give it 3.5 stars. The story was interesting, though told very poorly. About half the book was spent talking about how rich and spoiled she was, first as the king's daughter, then back at home with her own family. It could've been condensed, I think. And I would have liked to know a good bit more about how Abdellatif fared in the real world after their escape. I know she wrote a second book, and I hope they're all in it, but I honestly don't know if I feel like reading any more of her writing. I'd really just be reading it so I could see what happened. Not from much enjoyment.

MOROCCO

Another great find from the Johnsonville Countdown Fridge Library . This story puts a spotlight on Morocco’s human rights abuses and political prisoners .

DID NOT FINISH: 19%

This book is so poorly written - it’s stream of consciousness writing, contradicts itself constantly, and the author is so vapid despite spending 20 years in prison.
