This was long and so I stopped halfway through and read some fiction. But it was very good. So detailed but easy to follow. Told in a suspenseful way (especially the action of rebellion and retaking). I found myself appalled and wanting to tell my husband about every shocking detail of the coverup. Tied in nicely at the end with The New Jim Crow.
So incredibly detailed from what happened leading up to the Attica State Prison riots, prisoners accounts, hostage accounts, and what happened in the decades following.
When I found this book the only time I had even heard of Attica was in the movie 'Dog Day Afternoon'. Reading this was a bit of an eye opener for how bad things had gotten. There were a few times in this that the editing wasn't the best but it wasn't too bad. The information in this book was very well researched, I learned a lot from this. If you haven't read this and do not know anything about Attica I would recommend reading this book.
I was blown away by this book - the writing, specifically about the events up to and including the riot is amazing. I couldn't put it down.
It did get very legally detailed in the middle and I lost interest in a few sections. But I flipped through those parts towards the end, which was as good as the beginning. I will be referring to this one again.

This book was heartbreaking to read. I usually read before bed and this book was the first I had to explicitly not do that for since the subject matter is so awful. Thompson really brings you in with this book and although made this hard to read, made it hard to put down.

This is horrific to read about. The government was (still is) extremely corrupt and the lengths they went to to hide what the troopers/CO’s did, is absolutely disgusting.
One of my most favorite books. Incredible story told incredibly well. The research and detail is extraordinary. Just a wow of a book.
absolutely devastating that the system that committed and perpetuated this injustice is still doing the EXACT same thing with virtual impunity 50 years later, this was awful to read in its own right and made very much worse by how utterly the united states continues to fail its people even to this day
Easily a five star book. I obviously have heard of Attica, but did not know the story. I am so glad that I read this book and even more glad that it was written. In the Epilogue, the author stated it took her 10 years to write this book. I can't believe the effort it must have taken to put this together. If you have a pulse you should read this book, I guarantee it will be worth your time.
