Strong sequel to the first book, with alternating points of view between Jax and Kavita. Some really interesting new characters, and I particularly love how the elders continue to be full of tricks and totally worthy of the respect that the kids feel compelled to show.

A couple of weak points -- some of the action is hard to follow, particularly after Kavita runs into Blue. Also, while the book pretty well stands on it's own, there are bits of really confusing dialogue between Sis and Jax that kind of derailed the ending for me. It might have been the audio book format, so I think I'll try to read it in print and see how it flows for me.

Update: I found it easier to follow in the print copy.

1.5 stars. The message is good, but I could not wait to be finished reading this book with Sebastian. He didn’t seem to mind, but there are far too many characters, and the plot just wanders around with no real purpose.

3.5 stars.
Fun series for young readers--great to see diverse characters.
Nothing exceptional--just a fun fantasy. This one doesn't really finish the story--much like many middle-of-a-series novels.

earc from netgalley.

it was alright, but it wasn't anything special and it seems like it is a little younger middle grade book, but if someone likes a sweet, not overly scary dragon book, this would be one for you.

I adore this series! So much with identity, healing, community, history and magic. I hope there's a 3rd to come!

Privileged enough to see Zetta Elliott chat at a virtual library event, and I just adore these children's books. I would have been so into them as a kid - SO Much Good Dragon Content. Matter-of-fact addressing of hard themes, non-nuclear familial relationships, and the importance of doing the right thing and trusting yourself. And dragons. Extremely important dragons.

What a joy!
I read this in one sitting after a busy day. I was quickly absorbed by the story, the second in a series that picks up right where the first one ended. Kavita, Jaxon, Vik, Aunty and Kenny jump off the page with themes of family and friendship. The dragon at the center of the story grows and grows every time it eats something sweet, so there's an element of race against time to get it back to the magic realm.
It's Brooklyn and Queens, but Brooklyn and Queens with dragons! A tension exists between keeping magic in the magic realm and keeping it out of the "non-magic world;and there is Blue a villainish character who wants the worlds to merge. He has his reasons and like the other characters he isn't all one thing or another.
I enjoyed hearing from Aunty and I learned about the Siddi in India, people brought from southeast Africa by the Portuguese to work as slaves in India. I love how Zetta Elliott infuses her stories with cultural knowledge, history and curiosity.
Looking forward to the next in the series!!

2.5 stars. This wasn’t nearly as enjoyable as “Dragons in a Bag” and the characters could be very frustrating, but it does have some good messages for kids about loss, family, and assumptions. I wish the last line of the book were different.

This book was not as engaging as the first in the series. The main characters didn't really do anything that made a difference. I thought a lot of the descriptions were long, which isn't the greatest for a children's book.

I did like the diversity of the cast, the illustrations, and the setting(s).
