Dr Siri and the view into Laos as a communist country is what sells me on these books. The unexpected humor these characters find in their life as well as their abilities to sole mysteries is a joy to see. I am diffident about the spirit part of this book.
Another interesting and spiritual book from the divine Laos.... I love Dr. Siri!

Maybe two lots of Dr Siri one after the other was a step too far. Or maybe its the athiest in me, who feels rather dissatisfied with solutions being provided and mysteries solved by intervention of the spirits. Either way, although rather an addictive pleasure, knocked over in a day, this one really didn't do it for me.
Nevertheless, I will probably read more in the series. Where else am I going to find a light mystery diversion set in Lao (other than Le Carre's Honourable Schoolboy)?

I am really enjoying this series on audiobook. In this second book Dr. Siri Paiboun and his colleagues are faced with some strange deaths. In an effort to figure out what has been killing people, Dr. Siri has to learn more about himself and his gifts that were revealed in the first book of the series. While the mystery is interesting, I read these books more for the characters and settings. I learn a lot about the history of communism in Asia and in Laos in particular. Dr. Siri is a great character and the supporting characters are complex and interesting as well. I will definitely continue the series.
I would give this book a 2.5. While the supernatural elements are interesting, Cotterill needs to be careful not to use them as a deus ex machina. I do like these characters and want to see how they develop, so I'll try one more.
Not quite as neatly structured as the first but equally well spent time with these characters - i'll seek out the next .
Another adventure of the ageing, chief (only) coroner of post revolutionary Loas. Several different stories interwoven, principally the seemingly inexplicable death of Vientiane folk by a wild animal. The conclusion is reached via an exploration of Laos culture, which takes us deeper into Dr Siri's spirit self. An enjoyable read. If this style of historical fiction is your thing, you will appreciate this novel.
