This has to be my favorite book this year and one of my favorites of all time!! It took me a second to get used to the narration style but once I did I thoroughly enjoyed it, it reminded me a little of Lemony Snicket. I haven't found myself liking and rooting for every single character in a book like I did with this one in a while. The plot was great, the writing style was amazing, and I loved the way the author kept giving us pieces of the puzzle in every chapter. I highly recommend it!

This book has a million good things to say, but I particularly loved the portrayal of motherhood.

She whispered: "You shouldn't have given me the money." That was the closest the woman ever came to asking her child for forgiveness.
The bank robber often thinks about that to this day. Not about how terrible it was, but about how odd it is that you can't hate your mom.
That it still doesn't feel like it was her fault.

The bank robber blinked several times.
"Sorry? Your son?"
"He's a police officer, too. He'll be the first one through the door." The bank robber felt her throat tighten and her voice faltered.
"He sounds brave."
"He had a brave mom. She would have robbed banks for his sake, if she'd had to.”

Ro will sleep beside him, perfectly still, on white sheets, without feeling afraid. Because she would have crossed mountains for his sake, would have done anything. Robbed banks, if necessary.

No one talks like this, every single character is annoying. DNF at 25%.

this was well-written and objectively a really good book but i feel like im not a huge fun of fredrik backman’s writing style bc it was so hard for me to get into it and finish the book. the same thing happened with his other book but i still enjoyed the ending. (3.5 stars maybe)

Lots of wonderful foreshadowing and coming back to tie things together. The book rambled a bit at times which made me feel anxious, and I think that may have been the point? Haha. I enjoyed it, had a Liane Moriarty vibe a bit for me as well as true Backman.
