review

I really enjoyed the relationships between all the characters, especially Yads and Jules' relationship and how it formed. However I do believe the overall plot was kind of... obvious, as in it would obviously end up being someone close to them that end up hurting them. But the whole storyline throughout the chapters is what kept me going, wanting to learn more abut the characters, how relationships formed and what exactly would happen! I found the book to be a average paced read at least and didn't rush myself to get through. I definitely would love to talk about the characters, I believe the culture and characters are really what made this book stand out.

Conclusion

Pros: really enjoyed seeing the difference in culture and how they view lgbt folks
Cons: overall ending didn't give much of a surprise or suspense
Overall 4/5 stars

Love, Love LOVE, This book. Read this twice loved it each time. Would highly recommend for any fan of fantasy elements in a realistic settings, LGBTQ+ representation and discussions, and a satisfying ending.

Personally fantasy is not my taste, but even with that this book is really funny, creative, sensitive. Also, it's really good with "show don't tell" and every character feels real, the brujx society is well structured and it feels real, i say this as a Latina witch

[SPOILERS]
Still, i think the ending confrontation with the uncle could have been more long and dramatic, the middle it's a little slow and tedious (for my personal taste) and if this was part of a series with a bigger villian i think i would enjoy it a little more, since the uncle didn't feel threatening enough for me.

I absolutely loved reading this book. I had only heard good things about it and knew very little of the plot before opening it. I am so so glad that I did though. The story is compelling and interesting while still being fun and emotional. I felt so much for both Yadriel and Julian. Thomas’ characterisation is fantastic and makes these characters so loveable. They are flawed and infallible and they feel so real. The way their culture is threaded so intensely into the story makes it so fascinating to read. I found myself so interested in the story being told and the mystery we were given. That’s all i’m going to say without spoiling any details. I would 100% recommend Cemetery Boys if you’re thinking of giving it a go, if not for the cover alone then the wonderful story within.

i really enjoyed this book! the strongest parts were the opening and the ending because i felt as if that was when the characters and plot strength were at their strongest. the rising of the plot action and the connecting of the romance plot and the other plot could have been incorporated together a little bit more because throughout this book, they seemed to drift off from each other a little too much to the point that i forgot what the main plot was. the characters are complex and well-written especially as teenagers. this author is very good at writing believable banter and genuinely funny jokes that teenagers would say. i greatly appreciated this. i felt that some parts of the book could be a little too clear on what the author was trying to get across but that could also be because it is their first book (and an incredible entrance into the young adult world). my main criticism definitely lies in the plot build up and a little in the romance area. i felt as if more could have been added into the story to really fully demonstrate why the romance was happening and i felt that there needed to be more emphasis on the main plot. there should have been more things going wrong; more clues that something bad was happening (i thought the hints that were given were GREAT
especially when they write about yadriel's tiò being constantly overlooked and the missing jaguar foot
but i never got the sense that something really bad and scary was going on until the main action. THE MAIN ACTION WAS GREAT THOUGH. absolutely incredibly written. i like guessing the endings of books and this one was just predictable enough that i already knew what would happen (to an extent) but the climax point was so well written that i was still on the edge of my seat. the characters are great. the development is amazing. the representation of the trans experience?? chef's kiss.
