I loved this book! I read it in four days, and that's coming from a slow reader. I was so hooked from the first line! The writing is impeccable and the diversity is just what I was looking for. I loved the pacing and I fell in love with the characters before I was finished the fifth chapter!
The love story between Yadriel and Julian had me sobbing
This amazing story about love, family, and acceptance will warm your heartstrings. I cannot stress enough how good this book is and I hope whoever sees this will go read it right now. This is definitely at the top of my list for recs and I have no doubt it will stay there for a long time!

i really enjoyed this book! the strongest parts were the opening and the ending because i felt as if that was when the characters and plot strength were at their strongest. the rising of the plot action and the connecting of the romance plot and the other plot could have been incorporated together a little bit more because throughout this book, they seemed to drift off from each other a little too much to the point that i forgot what the main plot was. the characters are complex and well-written especially as teenagers. this author is very good at writing believable banter and genuinely funny jokes that teenagers would say. i greatly appreciated this. i felt that some parts of the book could be a little too clear on what the author was trying to get across but that could also be because it is their first book (and an incredible entrance into the young adult world). my main criticism definitely lies in the plot build up and a little in the romance area. i felt as if more could have been added into the story to really fully demonstrate why the romance was happening and i felt that there needed to be more emphasis on the main plot. there should have been more things going wrong; more clues that something bad was happening (i thought the hints that were given were GREAT
especially when they write about yadriel's tiĆ² being constantly overlooked and the missing jaguar foot
but i never got the sense that something really bad and scary was going on until the main action. THE MAIN ACTION WAS GREAT THOUGH. absolutely incredibly written. i like guessing the endings of books and this one was just predictable enough that i already knew what would happen (to an extent) but the climax point was so well written that i was still on the edge of my seat. the characters are great. the development is amazing. the representation of the trans experience?? chef's kiss.

This book definitely shone in how real the characters and their relationships with one another felt, as well as how rich and descriptive the writing was, especially when it came to showing Latinx religion and culture. However, for about 60-70% of this book I wasn't really looking forward to picking it back up when I put it down for the day. I think this was because the pacing of this portion of the book was VERY slow (due in part to repeating information), and in the beginning it was quite info-dumpy. For this reason, I was looking at giving this a 3.5 stars but the ending really got to me.

While the initial conflict of the ending felt anticlimactic,
the resurrection conflict totally gripped me
. The ending also had me completely taken by Yadriel and Julian's relationship and how fiercely they loved each other. Finally, I found the epilogue really moving. These three elements cemented this book as a 4 star.
