So sad to have this series end but so happy I jumped back into it. Lois Lowry created one of the most interesting worlds and was able to tie together so many different places with different backgrounds effortlessly. This was an absolute joy to read and I would recommend the whole series to anyone!
It is an absolute embarrassment for me to have waited so long and to have been so clueless about needing to read this trilogy + one. And it never even occured to me that this was the first dystopian kinda trilogy that anyone even thought about writing! Talk about foresight! Lois Lowry has always been an inspiration for me, but now she has reached this pinnacle of total awesomeness that makes me sound like a valley girl as I gush!!! I loved the way each title in the series lead to the next but also didn't directly address the others. And this is one series where I did not dislike the wrapping up of the loose endfs for me...exquisite stuff!!!
Carino, ma molto più da "bambini" degli altri volumi della serie. Il finale un po' troppo scontato, la storia del baratto che aspettavo di scoprire dal volume prima spiegata in maniera poco originale (era il "male"? ci mancava solo che voleva conquistare il mondo ed avevamo fatto il massimo dell'originalità) ed anche un po' noiosa.
La storia di Claire non era particolarmente interessante perché continuava a ripetere cose che i lettori sapevano già se avevano letto i precedenti tre libri prima (e si presuppone che nessuno legga il quarto libro prima dei primi tre, no?). L'inizio della storia di Claire per il 90% è stato un enorme riassunto, i colpi di scena non esistevano perché si basavano su cose che il lettore già sapeva e il punto di massimo interesse avrebbe dovuto essere la scalata. La scalata davvero? venti pagine di lei che si arrampica su una scarpata, non il massimo dell'interesse.
Gabriel è un pochino più interessante, o meglio sarebbe stato interessante se avessimo potuto chiederci: possiamo fidarci della vecchietta? è buona o cattiva? che cosa vorrà mai da lui? ma avevamo già tutte le risposte! Come sarebbe stato meglio se avessimo potuto dubitare di Jonas e dell'esistenza di questo baratto quando invece sapevamo appunto già tutto.
Un libro non necessario per la trama, secondo me. I primi due libri erano su un livello completamente diverso credo che Lois Lowry avrebbe dovuto fermarsi con quelli.

Given the decades and years between books, this series was over for me; I had no plans/time to read the fourth book. Then I listened to Kathy J's booktalk to the Young Critics Club and was driven to read SON. What a mind Lois Lowry has. Brava! to her.
ending was just a bit unsatisfying but I think that is probably OK.
I love this whole series. When I found about the fourth, I thought about rereading the first three, but passed. I wanted to read this with fresh eyes. I'm glad I did. Parts of the other books came back as I read this book. There are other reasons as well, but I dot want to spoil.
The book got slow for part of book 2, but the end result, book 3, made up for it a bit. The second part is the reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars. For me, the ending of the book, and the series, was excellent.

This was a great conclusion to The Giver series. I didn't think the series would finally come together to form a cohesive narrative, especially when I read Gathering Blue.... At least Messenger was connected to Gathering Blue, but then again I thought the two were going so far away from The Giver....then I read Son.... This was a great read.
If you've started "The Giver" series, you should complete it. "Son", the last book in the quartet finally ties together all the characters and loose ends. I liked, but didn't love the series.
I enjoyed the 1st 2 books, but when I got to the 3rd I just couldn't bring myself to care anymore.
