I really, really loved a lot about this book, but I agree with some other reviews here that an open ending would have worked a lot better. And I don't think
Trademaster
as a character was dealt with well at all.

This story is divided into three sections called "Books". I was tempted to round up, but Book 2 was definitely less interesting to me than Books 1 and 3. But it was important because it tied together Books 1 and 3 and overall, this story tied all the loose threads together. This series was really great and I'm only sorry I didn't discover it sooner. Many of the students in my area read the first one for class, so I had no idea it was part of a series until this year. And although I read The Giver about 3 years ago when my daughter was in Elementary school and read it in her class, and I thought it to be good, the rest of the books really enhances the story and makes it all the more interesting. While one can definitely read (and study) the first book as a standalone, it's not quite as interesting without the rest of the books (imho). If you have ever read the first book alone and thought it to be decent, I would recommend that you go back and read the entire series. This was well worth the time invested.

I loved this book. I would definitely recommend being current w the previous books before reading this one though. The story stands on it's own, but I feel like I would have enjoyed it even MORE had the precious books been fresh in my mind. I think this book is a testament to a mother's love and also reminds us that when we have nothing we really still do have plenty and when bad things happen, remain positive and don't feed the evil.

Unfortunately, this was my least favorite of the quartet. I thought I was going to be provided a lot more answers from the first book. The first book, The Giver, has been my favorite book since middle school. I have re-read it probably 10 times. This book, Son, was supposed to be the “thrilling conclusion”. It was not at all. There were a lot of things that did not make sense and so many left unanswered. In similar fashion to book 2, so much happened within the last 2 chapters that made it seemed rush. Which is crazy for me to say, because the entire book DRAGGED ON and mostly did not seem relevant to the story at all. I much rather would have heard more about Gabe’s life rather than the new character, Claire. As this quartet went on, it got more and more on the supernatural side and less dystopian. I just wish were able to find out WHY Jonas’ home community was the way that it was and HOW?

A beautiful ending to my favorite series

This book just wasn't for me. It was interesting enough that I did finish it. Maybe it was because I didn't read the entire series, though I didn't feel like I was missing any background. It was easy enough to figure out the premise at the beginning without having read the others. The book just felt disjointed. It was divided into 3 "books"- as it should be as it felt like 3 stories. But in each of the books I felt like it was just getting interesting and it just cut off. And the end........well, I really felt like for my tastes it should have been fleshed out just a bit. But maybe that is what will lead to another book in the series. I was hoping to love it so much that I would feel compelled to go back and read the first three. But not the case for me. Luckily, there are so many books in the world there are books for everyone. This one wasn't my taste, but I'm sure for others this will be a wonderful exploration. It wasn't boring........and I stuck it out which says a lot. So try it out.......it's worth at least a look.

Much better than Messenger, but still sort of ridiculous. My advice stands that everyone should stop reading this series after The Giver. I'm going to try to forget I read the 3 sequels.
