This one took a little longer to read than it should have. The fault was not with the book but with the reader. I'm glad I finally managed to make time for it, though, as it was a fitting end to the series.
This book does a good job connecting to all the other books. I really like Claire's character. Passionate and determined. Very determined! And the characters she meets along the way are wonderful. I loved the village by the sea and wish it wasn't so isolated from where she must go. This book has many past characters that meet up once more. A well rounded, nicely paced story that I fully enjoyed.
It was great but i believed that it ended too soon :)
Excellent! If you have read the Giver, this companion book is very satisfying. I loved seeing how Jonah and Gabriel fit into the story. Claire's story-is beautifully tragic-but don't worry even if it seems a bit rushed (and a little unbelievable that the bad guy is so easily disposed), the ending is happy.
Summary: Unlike the other birthmothers in her utopian community, teenager Claire forms an attachment to her baby, feeling a great loss when he is taken to the Nurturing Center to be adopted by a family unit.

After that much world-building and character development, the ending seemed a bit rushed and disconnected from the rest of the novel. Still an entertaining journey, though.
Good wrap up of the quartet!
I enjoyed the weaving in of all.
And the overarching kindness/love theme.

I finally wrapped up The Giver series that I started, like may of us, in middle school. It feels so good to see how Gabe and Jonas ended up. The Son is split into 3 parts and mainly tells the story of Claire, Gabe’s birth mother. Pain through loss and longing of maternal love is the main theme of this book.
I was really invested in the first part of the book because we were back in the original Giver community learning how Gabe’s mother longed for him and needed to secretly go against the governing system to connect with her son. However, I was confused by how Claire ended up in the other community and felt that part of her story dragged a bit (I believe it was the community from The Messenger).
Conversely, I wish there was more detail and character building in the third part. We finally get a wrap on how Gabe and Jonas are doing, but I wish there was more story behind their growth and relationship with each other in this new community. The fight with the trade master also seemed to be a weird addition to the storyline to focus on, but I am happy with the ending.
