I loved reading this book, as well as, "The Giver" and Lowery's companion books. However, I did feel that Claire's story was very long and involved and I would have liked to learn more about Jonas and Gabe. I would have liked to know more about Jonas' gift. (**Side note** - I did not read "Messenger" but did read "Gathering Blue". Might have missed something by not reading that book, yet!)
Overall, I was excited to finally learn what had happened to some of the characters in "The Giver". Claire's perspective of Jonas' father was interesting. He seemed much the same as he was in the first book - giving and caring toward little Gabe. I would recommend this and any of Lois Lowery's books to any upper elementary student, especially those who enjoy dystopian literature. A great entry place for this genre.

Finished this on the cruise 2 weeks ago. It was a good ending the the story. I probably enjoyed this book the most of the sequels, but again, none of them were able to compete with the original, The Giver.
Tied up some loose ends and I liked Claire but not as much character development as I prefer. Ultimately, just your basic good triumphing over evil, though that seemed to oversimplify what started out as a creative dystopian-utopian story. And what the Tradesman/devil has to do with the original dystopian society is not clear. Rather, he's just come along, gained power, and threatened the fledging utopia. I don't know. I guess it just seemed like an effort to tie it all together in too pat a manner. So I liked it but didn't love it. The whole series is a quick read and certainly worth it.
It was so nice to finally feel some closure with Gabe and Jonas, characters I had started following when I was 11 years old. I had never even considered wondering who Gabe's birthmother was, but learning about Claire and her struggle gave me even more insight into the community which was fascinating. I really enjoyed how the book was broken up into three sections, and how Claire become many different people. I was also happy that this book didn't end suddenly as GATHERING BLUE AND MESSENGER seemed to. Overall I'd highly recommend this book!
This is the 4th book in the "Giver" series. This is a must read if you've gone past the first book. This final book will tie together all the "different" storylines and put it nicely to bed.

I'd like to give it 3.5 stars. The Giver still reigns.
Nicely concludes the stories of Jonas, Kira, Matty and Gabe. Well worth the read if you were a fan of The Giver, Gathering Blue and Messenger.
A fitting end to an interesting series. There are still outstanding questions, but in all honesty, they don't need to be answered to have a satisfying conclusion. All the characters come back around and are resolved.
