I was truly enchanted by the beginning of this novel. It was fascinating to see the events of The Giver from another perspective. Claire's story was beautifully rendered. The second half of the book left something to be desired though. The subtly that is characteristic of Lowry's work is lost in the need to quickly tie up all the meeting storylines and fit them into a pretty box. The way the story ended was severely disappointing. It sadly reminded me of an episode of Adventure Time. I wish that Lowry had not been afraid to make the ending bitter sweet instead of saccharine.

I read "The Giver" for the first time just a couple of months ago. I fell in love with it! I was so terribly disappointed, however, when I read "Son." The book seems to lack the emotion of the other books in the series. It's almost like this was a last-ditch effort to tie the series up and the author didn't have a clear idea of where she was going. Parts of the book dragged on for way too long, but the end seemed to be rushed. Like some other reviewers said, it was hard to care about the characters in "Son."

What a wonderful end to a series. All the characters coming together. All the loose ends tied up. An amazing story.

It was a quick read in the same spirit of the Giver. I enjoyed it, although it did wrap up a little too quickly.
