A girl from the fascist society from The Giver, Claire, is selected to be a birthmother when she is twelve. But something goes wrong and she is transferred to the fishery. During the transfer no one remembers to give her the pills that keep everyone in the society contempt and she longs for her son, Gabe. When she realizes that her son is going to be sent to elsewhere and there is nothing she can do, she boards one of the trading ships and leaves the society.
