Kurly Tlapoyawa writes an interesting short book about Nahuatl (or Nawatl) thought & modernizing it for today's reader. This modernization embraces the pantheistic viewpoint of teotl in Pre-Spanish thought as a ever changing force that is the universe. More to the point, it tends not to give much adherence to any of the concept gods in the old Aztec religion.

This reinterpretation is largely atheistic (as he so admits near the end), imagining Nawa thought becoming scientific, naturalistic & never mentions the sacrificial or calendar systems the Aztecs previously employed. The author also displays a bit of contempt towards "religionists", which seems to be mainly directed at Roman Catholicism.

If you are looking for historical insight into old Mesoamerican thought & religion, then this is the wrong place as the author himself suggests Jame Maffie's "Aztec Philosophy" for that. But if you are trying apply Aztec philosophy through a modern lens, then this work can give you a fresh perspective.
