This book was very enjoyable and only too me so long to read as I read other books at the same time. I loved Emma and her cousins and their fierce independence despite the time period. I loved the way the author blended magic and fantasy with historical fiction. The magical elements were unique and propelled the story well. Emma and Cormac’s dialogue was highly entertaining. The development of their relationship felt very organic. They were both complex characters with strong opinions, and I loved watched those opinions crash against each other as the plot unfolded. The end came very suddenly, in a good way, and fit the story while also leaving this open for the next book in the series. I’m interested to see what book 2 has in store for me.

This book was slow getting started. The plot intrigued me, but I had a hard time connecting with the main character, and it seemed like we were jumping POV within the same scene. Some of the setting was also not well explained, but the parts I did understand of the magic and the world and the mystery to be unraveled I enjoyed.

Technically 3 1/2 stars, but I liked this book, so I'm rounding up.
I love spunky heroines, non-creepy love interests and the hardships of women's lives being pointed out, so this book spoke to me.
The narrative was slightly hard to follow at times, due to some similar names, sudden jumps in perspective, and (maybe only on the Kindle version?) odd line breaks during dialogues.
