A perfect book to read for my first Rotterdam book club meetup. It gets heavier and darker the deeper you get into it, the writing drags you in and makes the book difficult to put down.
A quiet kind of misery as seen through the eyes of a child with not horrendous but hardly good parents. The book conveys that helpless terror of being dependent on unreliable people very well. I frequently felt on the edge of meeting some terrify fate. What didn't work quite as well for me was anything that brought Claudia's parents back together. Those moments felt far weaker than anything that tore at them.

This is a quick and easy read, beautifully written without being too flowery or pretentious. A slice of life story with a very open ending told from the perspective of a little girl. At its core, it’s a story about women that feel trapped in their own lives and can’t see a way out, as well as the ups and downs of mental illness. And, even if it’s told by a child, it manages to address these topics in a powerful way without shying away from hard moments.

I read this in a day. It was engrossing but not pleasurable. However, there's an honesty--an intimacy--to what's been constructed. The childlike perspective puts an interesting twist on an otherwise mundane story. Atmospheric and vulnerable, you feel the temperature shift with anxiety. Like Claudia, you're always waiting for the other shoe to drop. An unsatisfying and yet perfect ending.
This is what literary fiction should be.
