An excellent example of the dignity of ancient literature. The introduction in this version is a little high-handed and overreaching, often claiming insights into Mesopotamian psychology that seem like an overt generalization instead of an illumination. The epic itself is understandable and a foundation for much that comes after it. To encounter the beginning is to better understand what comes after.
I really like the fact that the author doesn't fircefully fill in the blanks, but rather presents the translation as authentically as possible. There are several parts where we are missing information, and the author writes "we think abc might happen, because the story continues as xyz" and so forth. There is a lot of context given before the epic even begins, as well as how we have all this knowledge about the epic, which is extremely interesting and eye-opening.

The first story of all time (that we know of) and it blew me away. The fact that humans haven't inherently changed fills me with so much awe.

Humanity's first written story, epic in scope, epic in scale, leaving the reader awash in a a veritable deluge of emotions, awed, inspired, amazed. A work of art which has truly stood the test of time and the fall of civilizations - not only the one which spawned it, but many more which came after.
you expect the "first story ever recorded" to be mildly amusing homework not earth-shaking and life-changing...i'll be thinking about this for a long time before i have anything meaningful to say about it!!
