When the dog walker hired by Carly Kennedy and Max Sheffington goes to jail, their dogs, Baxter and Hazel, end up getting switched. Carly's investigation into Baxter's whereabouts leads her to Max's door, with Carly's abrupt behavior getting them off to a rough start, but their dogs are so into each other, that they have to make arrangements for them to meet again. As their dogs spend more time together, Carly and Max develop an attraction for one another that turns into something more, but their families and their jobs make it difficult for them to find a way to be together.

You Lucky Dog is a cute story with appealing characters and a plot so crazy, it's a little tough to feel invested in their lives. Much of the narrative revolves around coincidence, and a love story that takes a back seat to all of the absurdity involving the supporting characters. While there are multiple humorous incidents, they tend to overshadow the main characters, leaving their story feeling a bit flat. Overall, You Lucky Dog is lots of fun without a lot of substance. 3 1/2 stars

Thank you to the publisher for providing with an eARC.

The story starts off with two dogs being mistaken for each other thus leading their owners, Carly and Max to meet. It’s a weird Parent Trap situation, but not planned. Of course there are situations that cause the couple to separate, because ~ drama ~.

Overall this book was nice. Nothing overwhelming but an easy read. I don’t feel as though I truly connected with the couple and didn’t completely buy into their romance. This definitely had an impact on my enjoyment of the book.

Cheesy. Reminded me of a Hallmark Movie in book form.

Soooo I read the second book in the series first, and that one was cute so I thought I should go back and read the first one...

Oops.

I have the same qualms I had with the first, where it is just the most basic and privileged people problems, but whereas the last book had mostly likeable characters, this one does not. Carly and Max are both kind of annoying, but it is Carly's family that truly takes the cake, and while I know that there needed to be some sort of conflict, it was caused by the most INSUFFERABLE people I have ever read about. The longer I went through the book, the more I liked Carly because it made sense why she was so annoying - since she was related to these absolute self-involved weirdos.

However, the thing that really causes me trouble, and has caused me to not give a star rating, was the autism rep. While maybe I cannot give the most reliable criticism, it seemed very... outdated at best, insulting and damaging at worst. I was particularly horrified when Max was talking about his research, of which the details were so wild for this author to even think of, and even worse to compare repetitive behaviors in dogs to autistic people AND in the same breathe call it "so OCD." There were a lot of questionable concepts thrown into Jamie's character, I cannot in good conscience recommend this book in any way.

The cutesy cover of You Lucky Dog drew me in, then when I read what it was about I put it on my TBR immediately. I really enjoyed it way more than I thought I would. I figured it would be a light, and fluffy maybe a little unrealistic like a Hallmark movie. It was light and fluffy but tackled some pretty tough issues. Max has a Autistic brother who plays a pretty big part of his life in this book, and a widowed father. Carly very much has issues with her family. When family is a big part of the book I love walking away loving the family, but I did not get that in this book. The only family member I liked from both characters was Max's brother Jamie and the dogs. Cause let's be honest dogs become our family. The rest of them were selfish, and rude. I love the premise of this book with the mixed up dogs, very cute meet cute situation. I liked Max and Carly enough. I definitely liked Max more than Carly. Their relationship was a little instalovey for me. Since I thought this was Hallmarky I was expecting very fade to black/close door, but it had a little heat to it. I feel like those scenes were done well, nothing graphic, but also not closed door. The conflict at the end of the story was a little far fetched, I saw it coming a mile away. Overall I enjoyed this book will be reading the second book in this series.
