Wow. This was amazing. Amazing and enthralling and compelling. The characters are so interesting and diverse and credible and varied. The have complexity and dimension and nuance. The story engaged me and then surprised me. A very good read.

I couldn't put this book down and was completely wrapped up in the lives of the characters, which is told mainly from 2 perspectives and 2 timelines.

There's so many themes: sibling love and a little rivalry (for their father's affection); childhood trauma and abuse; mental breakdown and depression; loss; finding yourself; motherhood and maternal instincts; the role of fathers, who are less than present.  There's a lot to process.

It's well written and I enjoyed the opposing narratives and perspectives on the same timeframe.

This would have got a higher score if the book hadn't seemed to just suddenly end. There were some loose ends such as did Don Travers save his wife..did he refuse to take on a child already present.  Why didn't their mother do something to ease the lives of those left behind at the commune? There's a hint of uncovered truths when Nemony writes her letter to her dad and mentions that she'd like to kill Jon, yet we don't learn of how she knows of Jon. So many questions.
