Didn't finish at 62%. I tried, I really did. Such overindulgent writing with just the strangest, flimsiest plot. It was one of those books where I questioned who allowed those characters to be out there humaning and adulting without supervision. That was probably the author's point, but it just irritated the shit out of me. I understand the good stuff folks pointed out about the book in reviews, and the pockets of good writing are what kept me reading so long.

This book was a really compelling exploration of womanhood post “trans tipping point.” Each of these characters are flawed in large part due to their experience with womanhood.
There’s unsurprisingly discourse about this book partially because of the eye catching title/detrans main character and discussions about race within the text. In regard to the exploration of transness and detransition, I’ll be super upfront cishet folks this book is not for you. If you come in with an open mind and have the critical thinking skills to clock that these characters are flawed and do not speak in truisms then I think you’ll be ok. This is a book really for trans people and as such the nuances of the conversation are not gonna hit for everybody. As for the race element, I think people are well within their right not to enjoy this aspect of the book. However, I do think there are some people who think the narrative and the author are in favor of the shitty things our characters do. Like come on people none of these characters have their shit together and as a result they do fucked up things. They’re self destructive and selfish. It’s that flaw that prevents them from having the happy fulfilling lives that are just out of reach.
CW: miscarriage historical, transphobia, homophobic slurs, homophobic/transphobic hate crime depicted on page, violence, abortion, discussions of infertility, HIV transmission, racism
