Cooper (Corps Security #5) by Harper Sloan
Contemporary Romance. Self-contained story (kind of), but highly recommended to read in order.

WARNING: THIS REVIEW WILL SPOIL PREVIOUS BOOKS IN THE SERIES. IF YOU HAVE NOT READ BECK, DO NOT READ THIS!
Harper can write some sexy-ass alpha males, but if you are still reading this, you already know that. If you have been reading my reviews for a long time, you will know that I have the memory of an ant. I remember if I loved a book, I remember the major plot arcs, but side characters? Not so much. So honestly, I remembered Asher was kind of dicky, but after losing his bro I got that. I remembered a pregnancy, and I didn't even remember Chelcie (till I started Cooper and remember thinking Chelcie was kind of a whiny wuss in the previous book). So I went in a little blind. Harper didn't do a lot of recapping and reminding in this story, so refreshing your memory with a Beck re-read isn't the worst idea. I kind of wish I did, I think it would have made Cooper even better for me (and it was pretty great already)!
The prologue sets it up, and you immediately understand Asher. Asher and Coop grew up with such a horrible single mother. She was drugged out, abusive, and didn't even feed her kids. They were dirt poor and little Coop was malnourished. Asher, being the awesome big brother, took care of his little brother and took it upon himself to be his protector for life. They were as close as brothers could be, and when Coop was gone, and Asher wasn't there for the first time to protect him, it broke him.
"My brother was my reason for living. For as long as I can remember he was the reason I woke up, and now that he's gone, I have no clue how to move on from the darkness I've been drowning in."
Drowning his sorrows in booze until he can't remember his name (or the girl he is fucking), Asher can't stop thinking of Chelcie. He doesn't know that she and Coop had one night of comfort. He doesn't know that Chelcie is carrying a part of Coop with her. But he still can't stop thinking of her.
"The only woman I want is the one who acts like I've got the fucking plague whenever I touch her."
"No, I want one woman, and until I can figure out what has her running scared every time I hint at something more than friendship, I'm better off with my friends Jack and Jim."
Chelcie is scared to tell Ash about the baby. Besides having major feelings for him, he was always so drunk, she was trying to catch him sober. So until she can tell him the right way, she avoids him.
"Asher is the one man who makes me insane...with unleashed desire.
And the worst part? He's Zeke Cooper's brother--and the uncle to my unborn child.
Meanwhile, Dee keeps setting Chelcie up on blind dates. Ha! These were awesome! I was reading this in a hotel room at 3am with my family and woke them all up with a snorting laugh. But even more, I love Asher's Alpha reaction.
"A red-hazed fury chanting at me to kill. I wanted to rip his arms off his body and beat him with the hands that dared to touch WHAT. IS. MINE."
And once Asher claimed Chelcie, he wasn't letting her go.
“Sunshine, once I take you- make you mine- I won’t ever let you go. You’re mine, baby. This body, this heart, and damn sure this pussy. I won’t take you until I know you understand what I’m saying to you.”
Sure, easy to say when he doesn't know she is carrying his brother's baby!
When they finally really do connect, it's like BAM, a switch is flipped and they are perfect.
“We all have that person, Dee. Beck is yours. Axel is Izzy’s. Melissa’s is Greg. Hell, Emmy’s is Maddox. Every. Single. One. Of. Us. We have that person who makes us complete. He is my person.”
Asher is pretty hot:
“He has Axel’s protectiveness without being over the top. If what Melissa tells us is correct, he shares Greg’s bedroom skills. He has that huge heart of gold that Beck is famous for. And of course, he shares Maddox’s strength and determination.”
I love why he calls Chelcie "Sunshine":
“I’ve been stuck in this fog, this darkness that’s held me captive…This black hole of grief that I couldn’t escape. But then you came into my life…you were my light when there was none to be found.”
Chelcie, who I wasn't a huge fan of in Beck became one of my favorite female characters. She was so strong, so confident in her love, and she was his light, you couldn't miss it. She also had one of my favorite lines ever.
"Sway, My vagina broke the happiness!"

Dislikes:
- •The unconditional, confident love happened way too fast, and it was all a bit too smooth and easy.
- •The story was a bit formulaic and for me, I completely predicted even the twist (though it didn't ruin it).
- •The big case they were working on wrapped up with no fanfare.
Rating: 4.5 stars, 4.5 heat
I absolutely loved Cooper. I would just have loved to see a little more relationship development happen between Asher and Chelcie to warrant the love and faith they had in each other, but still, I loved the crap out of everything in this book, I just wanted a little more--it was a pretty quick read. I have so many amazing quotes and they were just such a healthy couple when they finally got together, it was a pleasure to read. Maddox and Emmy played an important part in this book, and I just can't wait to get my hands on their book!

Cooper was my favorite in this series thus far. Just a note - while you don't have to read these books in order there may be some plot spoilers for the prior books if you just jump right into this one. So slight plot line spoilers ahead for the first three books ahead.
When I first saw Cooper as one of the books in the series I just figured it would be the Cooper I had already met and was interested in reading his story. Only after everything that happened at the end of Beck obviously that couldn't happen. So I was excited to get to know Ash and know Chelcie a little better.
Man Ash is not in a good place when this book opens. I understand, but man. He is just drinking his way into oblivion and hooking up with random ladies all the time. He doesn't even remember them the next day or the things his says and does while drunk. He is definitely not a happy drunk.
Chelcie is trying to hold it together as well. She has some secrets, some things the rest of the friend family doesn't know, but the worst is how she feels about Ash. From the first moment she sees him there is just something there. She likes him, really likes him, but once he finds out everything he probably won't want to be with her. That and he would have to be sober long enough to actually have a conversation. They have been creating a fragile friendship in his sober moments, but it is not really stable.
When Chelcie knocks on his door one night when he is really wasted he says some things that he definitely doesn't mean and doesn't remember. They hurt her and she tries to keep her distance. Only then Ash sobers up, decides he needs to stop drowning his sorrows, and that Chelcie is his. He is going to stop fighting the draw she has on him and they are going to be together. Oh if only it were that easy.
Now after Beck when I realized what this story would be, what Chelcie's secret is, who Ash is, everything, I wasn't that excited about it. I just didn't think it would my favorite, but it was great. I really liked both of the main characters and loved reading their story. Chelcie is so great with Ash, so helpful and strong and there for him no matter what. Asher wants revenge, but can he do that without sacrificing everything? Oh it was such a great read. I really enjoyed this book.

I love this gregarious group of men and their women! Asher Cooper is new to this group; his brother, Coop (or Zeke), had been a part of them. Coop and Chelcie had helped each other through a difficult time, and Chelcie found herself pregnant, but never got the chance to tell Coop. Despite their relationship, sparks fly between Asher and Chelcie. And do they ever! They had a long series of ups and downs, trying to deal with their demons (Asher moreso than Chelcie), but they work hard to always be honest with each other. I loved Chelcie- and Asher was a great complement to her!

This was just simple plain romance which i would have liked more if first three books were more like it. It was rushed. They fell in love too soon. And I hate people who keeps calling baby. Please I was gagging the whole time I was reading. this book falls short of everything that was supposed to be. STORY. At least first three books had a good drama and I loved that!

I really love this series and have really been looking forward to this book. I loved Ash and Chelcie and was really glad the author made it clear Chelcie wasn't in love with Coop. That would have made this a much more difficult read. My only complaint was the speed of their relationship. It definitely was a bit fast for my taste but I loved their chemistry so it wasn't hard to overlook.

I really loved this story, and the series itself, has just got more and more interesting. Although when I first started this series, I was expecting a very different Cooper to the one I ended up reading about. But still I loved both him (especially when he got his head out of his ass) And Chelcie, and the relationship that developed between them was sweet, hot, and had me hooked until the very end. It was also great to catch up with a few of the other characters who all appear briefly, especially Maddox. As I'm very excited to read his story.
However, each book has had some elements of danger/suspense either to the lead female character, male character or their family, and this one was no different, but did seem to come a little out of left field, and when the threat did strike, it never really amounted to anything and personally I felt like the characters were never in any real danger. But this was my only issue, and it certainly didn't detract from how much I enjoyed and loved this story, and I would certainly recommend it to others.
