I was recommended this by a friend, G, who has been struggling with his own opinions on women for years. G used to be an Incel. As he got older, G educated himself and would now say he's a feminist. Having said that, I avoid conversations with him on women as he tends to come out with unintentionally unacceptable things.
This books is the summation of that. The female character is a manic pixie girl devoid of any personality trait beyond quirky. She exists for the male to talk about himself and (SPOLIER) she dies so the speaker can experience something akin to growth.
There are some hints that the book is attempting to address this issue, but it's over shadowed by the speaker learning nothing.
If anyone often type-casted as a Manic Pixie Girl who's job is it to make a man interesting - don't read this, It'll just piss you off.
If things like that don't bother you.... well to be honest, it's also fairly boring.

Looking for Alaska is a book I struggled with. It seemed an awful lot like Catcher in the Rye, which is one of the few required reading books I did not enjoy as a teenager. I kept waiting for something more exciting to happen, but it never did. The story moved slowly and Pudge frequently annoyed me. The only thing that kept me moving forward with this book were the few comical moments sprinkled throughout.
