Some had read her Regeneration books and liked a lot. Felt was ok, not gripping. Went from art classes to graphic war description.

immersive and thoughtful... tenderly and carefully drawn, the characters have life, but perhaps lacks a certain intensity

Quirky characters but the graphi WWI field hospital description were a litte too much.

Bringing us back to the WWI setting that Barker wrote about so skillfully in her Regeneration trilogy, in Life Class the author again takes us into the minds and experiences of young men and women shaped by war. Paul and Elinor met at art school in London, shortly before the outbreak of WWI. They circle each other, entangled with other people, but destined to connect. Soon after they do connect, Paul volunteers for the Belgian Red Cross, eager to take part in the escalating conflict in Europe. This book did not quite wow me the way Regeneration did, but it was still a skillfull and beautifully written book. If anything, it encourages me to read the rest of the Regeneration trilogy, the final volume of which won the Booker.
