I enjoyed this. I wish the 2nd and 3rd instalments in the trilogy had been better written, they didn't deliver.

I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars. Excellent read.

Every character in this was engaging and unique, but one shown brighter than all the others and that one was...the ship. Trouble Dog should go down in sci-fi history right alongside the Enterprise, the Falcon, and Serenity. She's a wonderful mix of war dog, regretful soldier, momma bear and philosopher. Would love to see her adapted for film, but they better damn well do her justice.

I'm also a sucker for minor characters. The Trouble Dog has a mostly unseen, multi-limbed crew member crawling through her innards, making constant repairs. Here and there, via their own brief chapters, Nod would comment on the events, like a Greek chorus of one. Loved them and their stoic but poignant take on often chaotic happenings of the plot.

I will definitely read the rest of this series. Do yourself a favor, pick up a copy, join Trouble Dog's pack, and enjoy the ride.

Gareth L. Powell has written an excellent novel shrouded in mystery from the very beginning, all while crafting a universe that feels filled to the brim with life!
