Whimsical and weird and a little spooky. I really loved the illustrations but didn't love the story. For fans of Coraline and Hayao Miyazaki.

I had such high hopes for this one but it ended up being an absolute disappointment. And the more I think about it the angrier I get. I don't even know what I am supposed to take away from this story. I think it could have been deep and beautiful but the author couldn't decide on anything from genre, target audience, plotline, etc. The first part is delightful, the middle is confusing and the end is abrupt and nonsensical. The last part was meant to make you go "ah, yes, this is deep and powerful stuff", but it made me go "I can't believe I wasted 20 minutes reading this". I read it twice to make sure I didn't miss the point...but there's no consistency and no resolution. What a waste of potential!
2.5 rounded up to 3 because the illustrations truly are gorgeous. Would recommend people skip the words and just look at the pictures. They might like it more that way.

5 stars for the artwork, 3 for the story. I loved the artwork, but I thought the story line needed some more depth, and the characters could have used some more depth as well.

ARTWORK: 5 stars
PLOT: 3.5 stars
Hands down the best part of this graphic novel is the artwork! Not only are there huge, splashy, decadent sprawls of imaginative artwork, but the artwork in the everyday, school, and city scenes is equally as wonderful to look at.
I think the plot could have used a few more pages just to thicken it up, but that being said I can definitely see a middle school-age reader going head over heels for this just as it is. I think it has very relatable themes: feeling a little outcast/misunderstood, wanting to explore interests, the drudgery of schoolwork, and each of these is expressed well.

Beautiful, fantastical illustrations!!! This is a magic portal, exactly what I love to find in a graphic novel. Also very eerie in parts, in contrast to the sweet and lovely illustrations drawn by the girl in the story.

The art is so pretty! But the story’s too short! I wish it was a bit longer.

The artist is fantastic, but what the heck is this story? Little girl sells her soul to demon that feeds off her drawings to get her math homework done?
