This story was going so well, the mash up of Ready Player One and Evelyn Hardcastle was incredibly well used, with a group of teenagers finding themselves trapped in a VR game, set in a mansion house with a murder mystery to solve before they can leave - potentially with a life changing amount of money.

Unfortunately, the ending let this book down so badly I was going to rate this 3 stars, until I started to mull over the other problems with this story and ended up deciding on a 2 star rating. The ending uses two of my least favourite tropes, and while I appreciated the Agatha Christie reference, I left feeling frustrated.

The other problem this story had was the complete lack of answers about how the game worked, who was running it, and exactly why the game seemed to be glitching so badly. I wanted more time spent on the actual mystery, but we only got a few scenes with the NPCs and I didn't feel the story wanted to be more of a slasher horror, whereas I wanted to stay and fully immerse myself in the game.

I devoured this book, gripping and thrilling. A must-read for young adult, gamer readers. Enter the world of this new virtual reality game where you can not escape until the game has finished or you die. Very similar to cluedo, it's a murder mystery that needs solving, but with the game malfunctioning, real lives could be at stake here. Fellow players could be the enemy. Would you risk it all for a huge cash prize? A well thought of story and plot with a HUGE twist you will not expect. Jaw dropping. I enjoyed every page. This is a story that will be hard to forget. Has a map layout in the front of the game setting/house. A well-deserved five stars from me. Highly recommend.

I really enjoyed this book. It felt like Black Mirror meets Agatha Christie with a touch of the Ring. This is a great December recommendation for anyone looking for a cozy, snow-bound thriller for the holiday season because the ticking clock of the game is tracked through a snowstorm! I loved the setting and enjoyed the dynamics of the characters (they bizarrely matched with the slasher I'm writing, so I'm biased), but my favorite part was all the meta elements. The murder mystery within another murder mystery was a lot of fun and as the game started to glitch it only got better.

Again, if you want book with a dark, fun, winter vibe - this is a great pick.
