Memoir of a brain surgeon. Purchased as one of the daily deals on Audible.
Great anecdotes. I'm a sucker for anything to do with medicine, forensics, lobotomy, surgery, etc.

I can't believe this book gets consistently high ratings. The case studies were ok, but the author is an egotistical and unethical ass who perpetuates toxic male culture.
Some may wish to give him some leeway because most of his stories harken from the 70s and 80s, but that is simply a cop out. At no point in this memoir does he even allude to feeling any remorse or regret for actions that wouldn't be acceptable today. In fact, he doubles down when he insists that residents today are weak because they are mandated to have fewer work hours. Ego over safety all the way.
Vertosick uses the, often devastating, stories of others to inflate his worth. This book is filled with falsehoods (show me a code where the only people present are medical students) and exaggeration (sure, I believe you were a completely capable brain surgeon right out of med school.)
As a seasoned healthcare worker, this book frustrated and alarmed me. Easily my least favourite read in years.
