I went into it expecting a fun but emotionally charged tale of two survivors, but what I got was two harmone-fueled teeangers.
Sure, there are a few thought-provoking lines scattered around, but mostly it's about two horny boys talking about sex and women while hunting for eggs in the middle of war and famine - barley managing to keep their own eggs in control.
Our main characters? Lev—a coward and a Jew (because it's WWII). Kolya—a deserter. And guess why Kolya was thrown into prison and labeled a deserter? Yeah, you guessed right: because he was horny and decided to chase after a woman in the middle of a war. Brilliant, isn't it? It wasn't some profound longing for love amidst the chaos. He just wanted to get laid, and when he couldn't find the woman he was chasing, he slept with someone else.
I genuinely don’t understand the praise this book gets. It’s absolute trash.
I couldn’t care less about the characters. They were annoying and just reacted to things instead of doing anything with purpose. No real agency, no real depth. I would've DNFed the damn thing if it wasn’t so short. I pushed through it—and hated every second.

I really loved this book. I found the characters to be very endearing and easy to root for. It depicts the horrors of the siege of Leningrad while managing to keep the tone from being too much of a downer thanks to the book’s humor. I recommend it for sure!
