I don't normally leave star ratings on essay collections, but I can unequivocally say that I either do not have the same taste in essays as Edward Hoagland or that 1999 was a weird year for essayists.
The only two pieces that stood out to me were Brian Doyle's The Meteorites (about being a summer camp counselor) and David Quammen's Planet of Weeds (about paleontology and the presumed upcoming mass extinction of the human race).
