there is something so vital and important to Bazterrica’s use of animals in her works, an emphasis she places on them that is difficult to describe.
this book was insane. i felt sick for most of it, and when i wasn’t feeling sick i was feeling enraged. marcos’ spiral was wonderfully portrayed, and the ending, though it makes me angry and conflicted, really wrapped everything up well.
i will say i do prefer the unworthy more than i do this book, but that could be because i read it first. still, this was by no means a disappointing read

bizarro como me vi torcendo por atrocidades, e nem posso dizer que é produto de uma sociedade individualista, porque essencialmente somos bichos, e a sobrevivência é dos mais fortes e aptos. Uma obra com certa influencia de 1984 - mas qual distopia não se inspira ne -, senti uma energia bem parecida, apesar que o universo do Orwell é muito mais detalhado.

Well, this book was definitely not for me. I did not enjoy it and felt uncomfortable the entire time I was reading. Tender Is the Flesh is set in a dystopian world where a virus makes all animal meat poisonous, so society turns to slaughtering and eating humans instead, calling it “special meat.” Marcos, who works at a processing plant, is pulled deeper into this world when he is given a live specimen to care for.
The story is gross, gruesome, and disturbing. I get that the author was trying to explore themes of dehumanization, how people can become desensitized, and the dark places society might go when survival is on the line. But for me, the horror and discomfort completely overshadowed any bigger message.
This was not an enjoyable read and I wouldn’t recommend it.
