I originally read this book about 10 years ago and even though the plot is sad I enjoyed it.

Katie had been sneaking away from her Amish home with the help of her mother to visit her brother who had left the Amish community and these she meets a boy and they grow close and do what any normal 18 year old does and they sleep together, this results in Katie getting pregnant but she doesn’t tell anyone about the pregnancy and pretends that it never happened.

One night she goes into labour and she sneaks off into the barn and gives birth but this baby does not survive and Katie hides the baby, this has the police getting involved and 18 year old Katie is charged with murdering her newborn baby and it is Ellie job to prove that Katie never killed her child.

what business did my middle school self have reading about neonaticide I crack myself up I really do

Man, this took me over a week to reread. I don't know, it was like pulling teeth. I mean, I like Jodi Picoult the person (a complete delight), but I think I'm now reading her out of habit? Um, I really enjoyed her books when I was younger, but now they are most definitely lacking...something.

have you guys seen that girl on tik tok who got an amish dress the other day
she would LOVE this (jk)

I kinda guessed the major stuff that happend at the end, which I won't say more about. No spoilers here. Jodi Picloult is an excellent author, really knows how to develop characters and tell a story that sucks you right in.

A Jodi Picoult favorite

The way the author handles a mystery, the Amish way of life, and intricacies of relationships was wonderful. I fell in love with this book and really couldn't put it down. It's not non-stop action, yet at the same time there weren't any slow parts. Something was always going on that made me think about the characters, what would happen next, and what really happened. Great read!
