Plain Truth

In the back of this book, there’s an interview w the author and she’s asked the question - who are your readers? And she says her readers are people who have a thirst; they like learning and they don’t like to read the same book twice. They turn themselves over to her, knowing she’s going to take them on an adventure.

Yep. That checks out.

Not the best book. However it was a good read when feeling lazy.

I really enjoyed this book as I'm fascinated by the Amish way of life. Well written with a real twist.

I usually like Jodi Picoult, but this was one of my least-favorite books by her.

Plain Truth kept me up late at night several evenings in a row because I couldn’t wait to find out what would happen next! Katie’s story was compelling, the writing was intriguing, and I enjoyed all the twists and turns of the plot.

Picoult is a master at character development and I really enjoyed getting to know Katie and Ellie, in particular. They were real and flawed and their relationship blossomed in a believable way as Ellie slowly gained Katie’s trust. Ellie grew tremendously from her experience on the Amish farm and even just from knowing Katie. I felt frustrated with many of Katie’s decisions, even though they made sense with her upbringing and belief system. My frustration is a reflection of Picoult’s amazing ability as a writer and researcher.

From the very beginning, I was captivated by Katie’s story of not knowing how she got pregnant and not remembering how her baby died. Having read several of Picoult’s novels previously, I knew there would be a major shocker at the end so I spent most of the novel tearing my hair out, thinking up various scenarios. You’d laugh if I told you some of the possibilities I cooked up in my head!

This book was interesting to read because I'm from the Lancaster area. However, I think the portrayal of the Amish was very simplistic and cliched. A lot of the plot was pretty predictable. It's a quick read if you're looking for something sort of fluffy, but I wouldn't recommend it for much else.

I very much enjoyed the story for the most part, but at times got confused on who’s pov I was reading from. It skips a lot to different pov’s without notice, and goes back and forth from 3rd person to 1st person.

Wow! Intense, emotional and beautiful all in one.
