I really wanted to like this book but it seemed to follow some unwritten "cozy fantasy" formula. A lone character picks up friends along the road while avoiding some tragedy in her past. MAgical cat? check. Delicious baked goods? Check. A powerful magician? Check.

But nothing was truly surprising or genuinely engaging. This was less cozy and more just boring. And it breaks my heart to say that because everything about the premise should have made this book a "just for me."

There were a few moments of truly touching moments but I feel like I kept being told in the text to be touched and emotionally engaged in the characters rather than letting the actions of the characters leading me to emotions. Show, don't tell.

I quite liked this cozy read. The characters were simple but likable, the stakes were kept small by being kept personal, and it still managed to capture the feel of a large world without becoming too complicated.

Very cute and light. It could have delved deeper into some of the themes that get brought up in the end but I think it would take away from the weightless and cozy atmosphere that the book carried perfectly throughout. A fun little adventure for our party of intrepid heros.

Delightful is the best word I can use to describe this book. Found family at its best.

Tao is a great main character because we see her grow so much but it isn’t rushed. She’s not resistant to people: she’s afraid of being hurt. Finally making true friends and learning to ask for help is tough but watching her do it is heartwarming.

This book is a warm hug.
