I would describe “Grey Dog” as a ‘slow burn historical feminist horror.’
I don’t read a lot of historical fiction, so this was an exciting read for me! While the horror elements take a while to set up, I wouldn’t say the story is lacking at all. The book is gripping from the very beginning and the prose is absolutely gorgeous. The ending was my favorite part because it was so gory and strange; but it succeeded as a result of Gish’s masterful slow build up of horror elements.
Gish’s take on hysteria, feminine rage, and Bacchic desires was just delightful.

Read if you like:
- women doing weird horror stuff
- strange old widows in the woods
- Eldritch creatures haunting schoolteachers

Don’t read if you don’t like:
- bugs and various strange forest creatures
- cryptic children

The slow burn of the story is what kept me going. I can’t wait to reread this one day.

Spooky, gay-ish, an unreliable narrator. Left me wondering what really happened !!!
