My new feminist manifesto. Slow, bold, and oh so chilling.

"I am not a place where nature can be weeded and tamed and kept in order. I am free roots-- and dark hollows-- and ancient moss-- and the cry of owls. I am not a thing that you can shape, not anymore. I am no garden, but the woods, and if you ever come near me again, every bit of wildness in me will rise up to bite you. I will tear your throat out with my teeth."

Not my typical kind of horror. A reflection on the the expectations for women laid out by society, and how the cage creates the monster.

Was going to give this 3 stars because it was so slooooowww despite the good writing and setting. BUT the ending redeemed it for me.

This is a gorgeously slow-burning horror novel; but I would say many people would be OK reading this, it’s not for hardcore horror fans only. In fact, you’re kind of rooting for it at the end…

This is Elliott Gish’s debut novel and…wow. Just wow. The scenery. The FMC’s narrative voice. The scene-building and the descriptions of nature. As terrible as the town of Lowry Bridge sounds, I somehow want to GO there? And be like a crazy witch living in the forest, yah!

nearly DNF'd half way, tried to keep going. not for me. I don't mind a slow burn, but this was too much
