I don’t even know where to begin with this book. I loved it so much, and thought Gish did such a great job crafting these characters, settings, and plot. Everything was so mesmerizing and interwoven in the most wonderful ways. Gish has made an obvious point of the role women were expected to play in society, and the madness that can drive them to. The parallels that Gish created between the major characters of this novel was amazing and gave this somewhat simple story so much depth. I was hanging on every crumb that Gish gave us for the first half of the book, and devoured every piece that was given in the last half. There were so many haunting lines that were fed to us from Ada that in itself wouldn’t have been very scary, but within the context of the town and novel were terrifying. Also, bonus points for including some gay stuff.

"Grey Dog" is a slow burning horror novel set in 1901, a beautiful, enraging, and liberating debut from Canadian author Elliott Gish. Thank you Net Galley for the electronic copy of this book! I loved it so much, I ended up purchasing a physical copy for my collection.
"Grey Dog" follows Ada Byrd as she begins a new teaching post in the isolated farming community of Lowry Bridge. This position is her last chance after being sa'd in the last town she worked. As she attempts to adapt to the newness of everything and navigate her students, the villagers, and her shame, something in the forest begins to call to her.
As the Grey Dog's voice becomes more clear, and it leaves her more offerings, the villagers watch Ada seemimgly unravel. We, the reader, on the other hand, watch her grow into something new and powerful.

A little bit of a slog at first, but the last third was gruesome, validating, and righteous.

The slowburn of it didn’t feel tense or like it was leading up to anything, it just felt… slow. (Although I guess that’s how Ada’s daily life was).
As a reader, it was hard to stay interested at times.
I liked the diary format a lot!
