So many aspects that I loved and a handful of brilliant misandrist one-liners but I felt the ending really failed to tie everything together. I understand that the ending was always going to be unhinged and messy but I can’t help feeling unsatisfied

DID NOT FINISH: 30%

pacing too slow for me – not much plot to drive the narrative, and mainly focused more on atmosphere and daily life than the spookier aspects of the town. also the journal format bothers me when it seems as if Ada is reciting everything like has photographic memory.

This was a fairly delicious read. Written as rich as the thickest, richest gravy, so much so that you find yourself looking for another dollop upon finishing the meal. All you can do is lick the spoon.

Where does mental illness end and horror begin? Perhaps with the exploitation of weak-willed individuals with soul-shattering pasts by a bored, poorly understood widow with time and spite on her hands?

Time to read more of what Gish has put to paper, because I believe it will be worth the second and third helpings.

"Grey Dog" is a gripping and haunting novel that delves into the complexities of trauma, rage, and liberation. Set in the early 1900s, the story follows Ada, a woman with a troubled past, as she tries to start anew in a small town. However, strange phenomena begin to occur, threatening to unravel Ada's secrets and sanity. Elliott Gish's writing is captivating, creating a tense and atmospheric narrative. The exploration of female rage and societal constraints adds depth to the story, making it both compelling and thought-provoking. Overall, "Grey Dog" is a powerful and evocative read that will stay with you long after you've finished it.

Precisely what I was hoping for this fine October. Super slow-burn, the real horror didn't start until later in the book but Ada's ~mysterious past~ kept me hooked even before it kicked in. The eerie undercurrent was there from the beginning and it was utterly delectable. Also, the audiobook narrator did a fantastic job with the suspense and building desperation and eventual mental breakdown.
Ada and the Grey Dog really settled under my skin, in the best way. Also, shoutout female rage and lesbian longing.
