I read this book very slowly, and I’m glad I did. I relished it. Easily one of the most compelling reads of the year.
Queer, feminist slow-burn horror that sneaks up on you until you realize, all of a sudden, that you’ve been in lockstep with Ada on her descent into madness. Or is it madness after all?
There are layers upon layers to peel back here exploring what it means to claw your way into a true version of self after familial trauma, discover sapphic longing, and inhabit a body you feel is undesirable.
The writing was phenomenal and I had to stop myself from dog-earing multiple pages because I wanted to revisit the prose again and again.
I loved almost every minute of this except the very, very end. I’m going to continue chewing on that one.

Ada Byrd has been given a second chance. After a scandal in her last teaching post, this spinster has been assigned a post at Lowry Bridge, a sleepy country village where she begins to see a way forward. A future in this little.
As she begins to make friends and to help her students improve their schooling, strange things begin to happen. She uncovers information relating to the mysterious departure of her predecessor. Animals start behaving strangely, and little “gifts” are left for on her walks.
Is Ada slowly descending into madness, or is there something sinister happening in this quiet village?
Oh this is spooky. Like your classic Gothic Horror novel the level of suspense and curiosity that I felt reading this! Ada is an interesting character, stunted by the loss of her sister, and the trauma of growing up with her overbearing father, she gives off vibes of very low self-confidence. Something she begins to overcome in Lowry Bridge, thanks to her new friends. There is also the forbidden feelings she appears to develop towards some of the women in her life, in particular the mistress from her last post.
Watching her slowly succumb to the mysteries of the Grey Dog in gripping. It makes you wonder initially if it is due to the quietness of the village, or is one of the townsfolk behind it? And what is the Grey Dog?
The development of Adas rage as a woman in the early 1900s, and the expectations placed upon her and other women slowly develops at the same time and had me wondering if this played into the Grey Dog’s attraction to her…

Grey Dog was the perfect slow-burn, gothic horror novel to kick off Fall.
Our new-to-a-remote-village narrator, Ada, arrives with nothing more than her dubious past. But, what follows is more than your typical bumps in the night as it explores gender norms in the early 20th century.
