This was very lovely and sad and it’s a great read if you’re in your 20s, feeling lost in life, or just love reading about big queer friend groups.

It is one that hits harder if you connect in any way to the MC (always love reading these books about new grads lost in life!). The friendships are truly the best part and I loved an interview with the author where she shared her ideas of where they’d all be now that the book has wrapped up. So easy to fall in love with each of these characters!

This was one of those books I had high expectations for based on the hype, and overall I was disappointed. The messages and themes were relevant and interesting, but the way they were executed through the characters fell flat. The characters were believably flawed, but their behaviour and the way they talked wasn't believable. Some of the writing is beautiful, but the prose doesn't slot into a believable narrative.

It took me a little while to get this book, but once I did I appreciated it. The characters are strong and fun and unique — definitely the highlight. And it exposes some important questions about expectations, perfectionism, and burnout.

If you like character driven novels with a slow burn, you will love this. This story is about Grace Porter. Recently graduated with her doctorate in astronomy, wakes up in Las Vegas, married to someone she doesn't know.

This story isn't at all what I was expecting.  It was outside my genre comfort zone. The writing was beautiful.  It was much more serious than I was expecting.  I loved the found family, and the way the author handled mental health issues. I liked the second half much more than the first. I liked that the main characwas closer to 30 and out of college. That is an age geoup that isn't as commonly written. It is very much worth the read.

I really enjoyed this book, especially because I felt Grace's struggles. I don't face barriers from racism between me and my chosen career, but I am very familiar with reorienting my life after accademia and with feeling lost after school ended.

📘The Gist 📘: After finishing her Doctorate, Grace's life plans quickly fall apart. At the same time, she deals with reimagining her life outside of accademia. In the midst of this pressure, Grace has an opportunity to build a relationship with a woman she accidentally married in Vegas.

📒Representation📒: BIPOC mc and sc, wlw, women in science, queer sc

💕 For readers looking for 💕: explorations of life transitions between accademia and careers, romance, emotional and mental health

[audiobook]

it took me well over half the book to really start getting into it, and relating to the story. i'm not sure how much of the writing style was purposeful, in that it was supposed to reflect the mood/fog that the protagonist was in for much of the book. the prose was often too purple and repetitive (vs. emphatic, whicvh  for me -- i understand the intention behind it, but it really grated on me, to the point where i considered dnf-ing. i just found it really hard to become immersed, although i was invested in the protag's relationships (friendships more than the romance), because i couldn't help but think, "no one really speaks that way". it was just too dreamy and awkward for me. the ending was pretty satisfying, and i appreciated that it wasn't perfect in every way. ultimately, the premise of the story was pretty good, but the execution fell flat for me.
