I liked the bad guy, but the story was a little too convoluted and details to keep me interested.
ugh. this book didn't get interesting until I was already 3/4 of the way through, and even then it dragged on too much.
Mostly enjoyed, though the ending really bothered me. I have a more thorough review up at NPR: http://www.npr.org/2014/01/29/267212844/allende-creates-realism-without-the-magic-in-ripper
The reviews for this book seem much too harsh. It's a fine story, told in an interesting way with lots of characters.
I enjoyed this "mystery" loaded with quirky characters with a back drop of San Francisco.
Wow. Incredibly long descriptions, in depth character portrayals and a mystery that has more twists and turns then anything I’ve ever read. A calculating and cold psychopath against magical realism and a just as intensely intelligent teenager. I recommend if you’re in the mood for a long read with a lot of details to keep track of.

Did Isabel Allende lose a bet? This reads like she was trying to mimic a bad crime novel.

Not really my genre but a gripping story that all comes together at the end. A lot of characters with a lot of back stories which were interesting but slightly slowed down the pace of the novel. Have preferred other Allende novels.
