The Summer Pact

Emily Giffin

3.3 AVERAGE

The story of 3 friends who come together to support each other

I would've given this book 3 stars until the end. The friendship was fun to read, the travel was fun and adventurous, and it was overall fun. But I did find the characters to be quite archetype-y, and a little just rude and inconsiderate, which made them hard to care about

the Tyson×Lainey thing was like... fine ig, but kinda out of nowhere, and an engagement at the end was crazy. Hannah × Olivia was cute? But also kinda sudden. Also very very weird at the end how she said they were 4 again in a way that to me implied replacing Summer.
I also often found the writing to be kinda unrealistic and show-not-tell-y

I did appreciate the mental health representation and the alcoholism awareness

This one took me longer than I thought it would. I liked the characters and the multiple points of view kept me interested. The premise is interesting and the beginning was very intriguing. As it went on though it felt a less and less believable so that’s why I had a hard time with it. But as with all her books I enjoyed it and am happy she’s still writing entertaining books!

I really appreciated the characters’ growth throughout the book, but especially Hannah’s. I realize it’s more of an ensemble situation here but it really felt like her book lol. Lainey was SO annoying to me but her growth was so wonderful to see & I think Tyson helped with that so much. I wish we’d known Summer a little better since she’s the catalyst for it all, but that’s my only complaint really.

DID NOT FINISH: 61%

First book by this author. Sub-par plot, over 200 pages in and not engaged with any of the characters. No depth to characters. Picked up audiobook to help make progress and narrators were terrible and killed any hope of wanting to finish. Voices were grating and with so much dialogue- it was so distracting how different each voice was from each POV. A few references to pop culture 2025 and just seems like lazy writing.

The content was boring and don’t care to read a white woman trying to voice the inner feelings of a black man. There are better things I can spend my time reading.
