I had high hopes for The Summer Pact by Emily Giffin, especially after the emotionally charged opening that had me in tears. Unfortunately, the novel took a turn that left me both disappointed and disenchanted as it progressed.
The initial setup was poignant and engaging, drawing me into the lives of the characters with promise. However, the story soon became insanely predictable, which was a letdown. While Giffin's writing is generally strong, as I've come to expect from her, the characters in this novel felt underdeveloped and frustratingly familiar.
Lainey, in particular, reminded me of a blend of Kevin and Kate from This Is Us, specifically her self-sabotaging behavior and reluctance to seek help until absolutely necessary. Hannah, on the other hand, echoed the uncertainty of Kate and Rebecca from This Is Us. Her struggles, while understandable given her background, made her difficult to connect with at times.
Tyson's character, while reminiscent of Randall, lacked the emotional depth that would have made him more compelling. The abrupt shift in his affections from Summer to Lainey seemed forced (Yes, I know there were MANY years in between). This twist, though anticipated, left me somewhat disheartened.
By the time the story reached Capri, my interest had waned significantly. The conclusion felt rushed and unsatisfying, and I found myself wishing for a different direction for the characters. Although the book wasn't entirely without merit, it's not one I would readily recommend to others.
