Violet has only ever known her uncles and the seclusion of a sheltered life since the disappearance of her mother. What she doesn't know is that every day brings her closer to the deadline of a terrible bargain---a bargain tied to a generations' old family curse.

I'm honestly surprised at the reviews. I really enjoyed this. I feel like Summers did a fantastic job casting a spell. I was riveted. This is a great read like for Erin Morganstern's The Starless Sea, which was also lovely and I feel like the two authors have a lot in common. I loved the atmosphere and I found the villain absolutely chilling. I don't love the ending, but I think it's clear there's more that will be told.

I was intrigued by the premise of this book but the experience fell a bit below par… I liked the first 3 parts but then the book kind of lost its way a little. It could have done with more world building, and possibly a ‘key terms’ list at the beginning as the ‘fantasy landscape’ developed. I felt a bit disconnected with this alternate world and felt that I was due a bit more explanation for me to truly understanding the story being told. I did like that there was queer representation but it felt a bit forced and ‘throwaway’ and was never talked of again. I also had a little trouble placing this book in a time period… this might just be me but I was thinking that is was a historical piece but about halfway through I thought it might be present day… I’m still not really sure! That being said I did enjoy the premise and the plot up to a point, so not all is lost!
