I'm genuinely shocked by how low rated this one is, I thought the writing was really strong, especially for a debut. This reminded me a lot of The Starless Sea, but mash that together with Middlegame by Seanan McGuire to properly get the vibe.

It’s one of those magic books where there’s a magic world but no one really explains how the magic works or what it is they can do with the magic

Solid 3.5 star YA story of magic, mystery, and marvels - rounded up to 4 as Goodreads doesn't allow fence-sitting :-)

- felt like it was trying to keep an air of mystery the entire book, but just resulted in me not having any idea on what was going on the majority of the time
- felt like it had no depth, all of the interesting parts felt unexplored
- some big plot holes
- didn’t feel interested in the characters at all
