It's taken me a while to write this review because I wanted to do it justice, just the way Carter masterfully concluded her trilogy.

I'm a bit harsh when it comes to finales. I find this is where a lot of stories crumble for me. They don't answer all my questions, the ending isn't earned, it feels rushed, etc.

Not the case with this beautiful conclusion. Here, we get continued character depth, dual storylines, further grief trauma reflection, wonderful new characters, high stakes, imaginative world-building, and a heartfelt ending that made me tear up more than once.

I don't like to sum up plots (the blurb does that) or leave spoilers, so here's what you can expect from FTD:

-a masterful reflection of processing loss and grief
-stellar character arcs
-a perfectly tied-off, yet still open-ended, conclusion to a series
-high stakes
-crazy worlds (OMG, so many things I could say, but spoilers!)
-characters you want to SQUEEZE
-beautiful imagery and moments that just make you stop reading to reflect for a bit

Honestly, this is a series I highly recommend, especially to those who want to dip their toe in fantasy. It's relatable, accessible, and relevant. I can honestly say I've never read anything like it, and part of me is sad to see these characters go. I look forward to whatever Carter tackles next and will be a forever fan.
