I like how the story played out and I had to read it for my reading class and I'm glad I did 5 stars

This Newbery Honors book started out so slow. I had a really difficult time getting through the first 75 pages. Luckily, it became quite good after that!

I did not think this book was going to get anywhere near four stars when I started it. In fact, I was almost halfway through the book before I realized how good it was!
Now, you should know that I usually hate books set in this time period because the female characters are so obnoxious. They just sit around all day doing what they're told, asking their maids to bring them whatever they want, and their biggest worry is if there's a wrinkle in their dress. Then they get married, have kids, and live more of their very boring and frustrating to read about life.
I get that this is how it was. I do. But do I want to be reading about it? Absolutely not.
So when I opened this book and found that this classic story fit the main character, Charlotte, was, I got nervous. Luckily for me, I underestimated her and when I kept reading I enjoyed keeping her company on her journey across the sea quite a bit.
My biggest problem with this book was that it was so unrealistic. So many things had to go perfectly for what happened to happened, and although theoretically the whole story could be true, it was super unrealistic.
Despite that, I thought it was a quick and fun read and I enjoyed it a lot! It definitely surprised me in a very good way.

When I'm home over Christmas, I often re-read books that I read as a kid that are still living in my childhood bedroom. This was probably my favourite book when I was 10; Charlotte finding her voice and becoming her own person despite social convention was everything my fledgling feminist heart wanted. It's not quite as captivating as it once was, and now it seems rather implausible, but if you set that all aside, it's still quite a fun book and I'll still probably recommend it to my nieces.

INHALTLICHES:

Reading with my 7-8th grade reading circle.

I didn't like this book very much. It's fairly short and meant for a young adult/teenage audience, but I wasn't fond of it. I didn't like the writing. I couldn't connect to the main character. In the end, I didn't like any of the authority figures either and, as 2 of those were her parents and what Charlotte ended up doing at the end of the book, I'd have a hard time recommending this book to the intended audience (including my own kids of that age). While I could understand how the characters feared Captain Jaggery and his deplorable actions, I have a hard time believing the story. I tend to agree with Charlotte's father, that she made it all up. Even for that time period, I just don't see the captain and the crew on the ship acting towards a 13-year-old girl in any manner that was portrayed in this book. At times, I maybe could have given some of the descriptive writing and dialog a 2.5-3 stars, but, overall, I didn't like this book at all and really struggled to force myself to actually finish it.
