I literally remember one thing from this book aside from the fact the I liked it: as she was going down into the hold she saw a skeleton.... or got scared... or something. knife?
Got it from the library, read it over March Break and don't regret a thing.
Fun adventure story for girls and boys. Good things of courage, integrity, and confidence.

insane to me that some of the reviews are saying charlotte has no character development or that she changes her views on class willy nilly.... there's a very clear turn for her!! of course the way the book handles race and gender is a little outdated since it was published in the 90s but i am shocked by how many people conflate the views of characters with the views of the author.
I remember liking this story back in middle school.
It was fun to re-read this novel--one of my childhood favorites. It has aged fairly well, but the dialogue can be a bit simplistic at times, and the conclusion seemed a bit rushed. I actually think it would be great for someone to write a continuation of the story perhaps for YA/adult audiences.
I have read and re-read this book so many times that the book has literally fallen apart into two pieces. I think I loved Charlotte's mixture of tomboy and "good girl" and the strength that she shows.
Other reviewers mentioned that it is unbelievable to see such a sudden shift in a character, but I think he is forgetting how mercurial adolescents are. Charlotte is exposed to an essentially life-shattering experience, and I think her reaction is at least feasible for a YA reader. Her loyalty and commitment, but Avi also makes sure to portray her fear and doubt.
I really can't say enough good things about this book.
