I am really enjoying this series! I love how all the different magical animal species have unique talents, and how they live in areas specifically suited for them. This installment had a number of twists and unexpected revelations, making it an even more compelling read than the previous two books.
I think I would have given this book 5 stars if not for the explicitly gruesome descriptions of zombie animals! The target audience is grades 3-7, so I guess the content is mostly appropriate for that age range... My third grade daughter seemed less bothered by the Dead Army than I was, so maybe it's my own prudish sensibilities that make me a little wary of the violence and gore in this book. Also, I didn't understand the point of the short-lived re-introduction of Grimslade.

Still an enjoyable series to read. I wish they'd focus a bit less on Aldwyn and a bit more on the other Familiars and the Loyals.

I couldn't give this a solid 5 stars because at the time I was reading this, I was so exhausted of zombies. But besides that nitpick, this was an incredible read and I enjoyed the adventure (minus the zombie animals).

I really enjoyed this book, but just didn't feel it was a very satisfactory conclusion to the story arc that encompassed this and the previous two novels. The ending crept up a bit too fast, as if making up for the slower pacing of the first two installments. I also didn't like the cliffhanger; more books are great, but it was so vague that I have no clue what to expect or if I'll think it's worth giving a shot.
